| Mount Vernon Blue Canton Dessert Plate |
Throughout the 18th century, huge quantities of blue and white tableware were shipped to America from the ports of Canton and Nanking. Like many prominent Virginians, George and Martha Washington used this Chinese tableware as the “everyday china” for their family at Mount Vernon. Washington's orders show a particular fondness for this exotic tableware. He placed numerous orders with his agents in England and America to purchase hundreds of pieces of this richly decorated porcelain. Canton china is known for its traditional hand-painted river scenes and other views of domestic life in China. The design on this Mount Vernon Canton plate is derived from a fine blue and white tray featuring the customary Chinese River scene. The original tray is exhibited in the Mount Vernon kitchen. Produced by Andrea by Sadek, as part of The Historic Museum Collection, this 8 1/2" dessert plate comes in a blue gift box with a provenance card.
