The American President Ornament Collection
Woodrow Wilson Ornament
Woodrow Wilson easily won the 1912 presidential election against his opponents, incumbent Republican President William Howard Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt. The primary focus of Wilson’s first administration was domestic issues, including lowering taxes, creating the Federal Reserve, establishing the Federal Trade Commission and strengthening child labor laws. In foreign affairs, Wilson maintained a position of neutrality during World War I in Europe.
Wilson’s bid for reelection in 1916 was successfully waged on a slogan of “he kept us out of war”. This all changed in 1917 when he asked Congress to declare war on Germany, hastening the Allied victory just one year later. Wilson’s list of Fourteen Points of American goals in the war included freedom of the seas, free trade, arms reduction, and the formation of the League of Nations.
