The American President Ornament Collection
Theodore Roosevelt Ornament
The political rise of Theodore Roosevelt began in 1889 with his appointment as commissioner of the U.S. Civil Service Commission. Theodore Roosevelt also served as New York City police commissioner, and as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Republican President McKinley from which he resigned to command the “Rough Riders” in the Spanish-American War in Cuba. He became known as a fearless warrior and inspiring leader. After serving as Governor of New York in 1898, he was nominated as the vice presidential candidate on President McKinley’s ticket in 1900. Just months after the election, Roosevelt was sworn in as the youngest president upon the death of President McKinley at the hands of an assassin. President Roosevelt was elected for a second term three years later. During that term he expanded the size of national parks, enforced antitrust laws and supported improving conditions for working Americans. Among his well-known successes was the creation of the Panama Canal, a project completed after the end of his presidency in 1914.
