The American President Ornament Collection
John F. Kennedy Ornament
Hailed as a hero, John F. Kennedy earned the Purple Heart during his service in the Navy. In April 1945, after leaving the military, he was elected to the U.S. Congress and served three terms. In 1952 he won election to the U.S. Senate. Kennedy won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for penning the book, Profiles in Courage, a biography of eight senators who bucked conventional or popular stands for the greater good—the foundation for his future stand on civil rights issues. In the 1960 election, he defeated opponent Richard Nixon to become the youngest elected president at age 43.
Kennedy’s administration was marked by several foreign policy challenges, one of which was the threat of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. On the domestic front, Kennedy was noted for establishing the Peace Corps, espousing desegregation and initiating civil rights legislation. His administration was tragically cut short when he was assassinated in November 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald.
