The American President Ornament Collection
George Washington Ornament
Young George Washington served in the Virginia militia, rising in rank to colonel by the time the French and Indian War began in 1754. During the Revolutionary War, Washington was elected commander-in-chief and led the Continental Army for eight years. His return home to beloved Mount Vernon and his wife, Martha Custis Washington, was interrupted in 1787 when he was elected president of the Constitutional Convention. Just two years later, George Washington became the first and only unanimously elected President of the United States. He took office in 1789 at New York City’s Federal Hall. Washington’s administration was marked by many “firsts.” He created the first cabinet and the first presidential commission. He issued the first presidential amnesty and veto and established the presidential tenure of two four-year terms. Widely respected as a man of character and leadership, Washington’s personal integrity and commitment to the public good set the standard for future presidents.
