Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C., the original building was designed by James Hoban. Construction began in 1792. British forces burned the mansion on August 24, 1814 during the War of 1812. Construction on the renovation was completed in 1817, and it now stands as one of our nation's historic treasures and symbols.
