In his two terms as president, Thomas Jefferson cut federal expenditures to reduce the national debt, repealed the liquor tax that spurred the Whiskey Rebellion, and protected American commerce by fighting the Barbary pirates, infamous for extorting bribes from commercial boats.

In 1803, America’s size was doubled when Jefferson negotiated the purchase of the Louisiana territory for $15 million from Napoleon.  This acquisition extended America’s borders from the Mississippi to the Rockies.  Jefferson’s interest in exploring new lands culminated in the commission of the Lewis and Clark expedition that charted land from the Missouri River to the Pacific coast.
