Schoolhouse, or Garden House Suncatcher

Schoolhouse, or Garden House Suncatcher

Price: $9.95

This Mount Vernon glass suncatcher ornament was handcrafted in Virginia using the same methods used in George Washington's time. As part of his plan for the upper and lower gardens at Mount Vernon, George Washington included four octagonal structures that added both practical and decorative touches to the gardens. In the mid-1970s, one of these small buildings in the west end of the upper garden was identified as the "schoolhouse" and it was likely that Martha's grandchildren, Nelly and Washy Custis, took some of their lessons there.  Made in America.
