In 1777, the Continental Congress declared that the new country would be represented by a flag of stripes with 13 white stars in a blue field. This flag was not universally adopted for several years, therefore a number of variations of the basic stars and stripes were used by American military units throughout the remainder of the Revolutionary War. The Liberty pattern is inspired by many of these flags.
