The Christmas holidays at Mount Vernon were a happy time, bringing together family and friends, good food, and freedom from work.  George and Martha Washington enjoyed a warm, welcoming reputation that encouraged visitors to trudge through ice and snow each year in anticipation of the generous hospitality at Mount Vernon.
