George Washington’s Christmas Camel Ornament
George Washington was fond of exotic animals and plants. In 1787, he paid 18 shillings for a camel to spend the Christmas holidays at Mount Vernon to entertain the Washingtons and their guests. That distant holiday season is remembered with this scene of a camel ambling across the east lawn at Mount Vernon. The circular ornament, which is made of scrimshaw-like resin, is 2 3/8” in diameter. Includes red ribbon for hanging.
