Dove of Peace Ornament
The final embellishment of George Washington’s home is the “dove of peace” weathervane perched atop the cupola. Washington designed and ordered the weathervane after returning home from the war and it was fabricated of copper in Philadelphia by Joseph Rakestraw. When it arrived in late summer of 1787, General Washington was in Philadelphia and quite concerned about it’s installation in his absence… “great pains…must be taken to fix the points truly, otherwise they will deceive rather than direct…” The centuries-old symbol of peace held special meaning for the man who had won his country’s independence and now was trying to ensure that it would endure in peace. The George Washington’s “dove of peace” weathervane ornament is 2 ½” x 2”. Polished brass finish. Made in the USA.
