The powder horn was a necessary piece of equipment for any militiaman, rifleman, hunter or farmer who loaded loose black powder charges in his musket. After the horn was removed from the slaughtered animal, it was boiled in water until the contents were soft enough to scrape out. A wooden cap was set into the mouth of the horn, and a wooden stopper was placed in the hole from which the black powder would later be poured.
