Since 1968 a staff of editors at the University of Virginia has been collecting and preparing to publish the complete correspondence for “The Papers of George Washington.”  Sponsored jointly by the University of Virginia and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union, the series includes much more than any previous edition published. The complete “Papers of George Washington,” a vast body of letters, military records, financial accounts and other documents which comprise one of the nation’s finest historical treasures will be published simultaneously in several series.

The correspondence volumes are divided into chronological series:

• Colonial Series – 10 Volumes (1748 – 1775)
• Revolutionary Series – 14 Volumes (1775 – 1778)
• Confederation  Series – 6 Volumes (1784 – 1788)
• Presidential Series – 11 Volumes (1788 –1793)
• Retirement Series – 4 Volumes (1797-1799)
