“Don’t Tread On Me”, considered one of the first flags of America, was presented to the colonies’ first commander in chief of the Navy by Colonel Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina.  The snake had been used as early as 1751 by Benjamin Franklin to express dissatisfaction with British government.  It was popularized by others, including Paul Revere.
