The lovely design on the top of the stopper is embellished with a griffin.  The “flying griffin”, a mythological creature with a winged lion’s body and a bird’s head, was featured on the Washington family crest for generations.  George Washington placed the griffin on many of his most important possessions, especially his silver collectibles.
