Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president during the midst of the Great Depression as the country faced widespread unemployment, homelessness and bankruptcies.  Spurred by his commitment to economic recovery, Roosevelt embarked on a series of programs called the New Deal.  Some of the New Deal programs that exist to this day include Social Security and the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae).  Faced with an uncertain international situation, Americans elected Roosevelt to an unprecedented third term in 1940, just one year before the attacks on Pearl Harbor.  
Reelected to a fourth term in 1944, Roosevelt’s efforts to ensure a peaceful society after the war’s end were cut short when on April 12, 1945 he suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage.
