During George Washington’s lifetime, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832), a self-taught Connecticut painter and engraver, printed and sold the engraving featured on the interior of this elegant porcelain bowl. In his ingenious design, the artist has encircled Washington’s portrait with a ring of 14 interlocking circles containing the seals of the United States and the original thirteen colonies. Within the circular borders of the state seals are population statistics and the number of senators and representatives designated for each state. The Great Seal of the United States is featured on the exterior of the bowl.
The attractive image which celebrated the Constitution and the new federal government appealed greatly to the citizens of our new nation. In Washington’s presidential years, Doolittle issued 5 new versions of George Washington’s portrait while periodically updating the names of states and their statistics.
Mount Vernon’s Replica Doolittle Bowl is 10” in diameter and 4” deep. The bowl is presented in a satin-lined gold gift box.
