MOUNT VERNON, Va. – Is it hard for you to get dinner on the table for your family? Try planning meals for unexpected guests – over 600 in one year alone – and a busy household, all while managing a bustling plantation. Oh, and supporting the president as this country’s first First Lady!
You can ask “Martha Washington” how she accomplished her responsibilities when she greets visitors at the Mansion from March 23 to March 28, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Historic interpreter, Mary Wiseman, presents a living biography of Martha Washington. She brings Mrs. Washington home to Mount Vernon after portraying the nation’s first Mother of Our Country at Colonial Williamsburg for more than a decade.
Martha Dandridge Custis married George Washington on January 6, 1759, and moved to his family home, Mount Vernon, several months later. After Washington retired from public service, the couple spent their remaining years on the estate, where Mrs. Washington died in 1802.
