This book, owned by George Washington, is a part of William Curtis' series of thirteen volumes of The Botanical Magazine. Two volumes of the set are bound together and carry George Washington's signature on the first title page. For each plant, this series includes a few pages describing its characteristics, history, and common names as well as a hand-colored copper engraving illustration. As a gesture of their shared passion for horticulture, Washington presented this and other volumes from the series to his step-granddaughter Nelly Custis Lewis in 1799.

For George Washington's other volumes from this series see W-1217 and W-702/A.
