Mathew Carey printed the first American edition of the popular geography text, commonly known as Guthrie's Geography, as a two-volume set accompanied by an atlas. Carey made changes in his American edition and George Washington allowed Carey the use of his personal map collection to aid him in drawing new maps. Washington also supported the endeavor by subscribing to the publication.

For George Washington's other volume from this set, see W-1233/B.
