A wonderful example of George Washington's lifelong effort to expand his Mount Vernon Estate, this indenture is the purchase agreement by which Washington acquired six acres from his friend and neighbor Captain John Posey. Washington purchased 200 acres of Posey's land in 1769 and had leased this key parcel of land along the Potomac River near Washington's fishing and shipping operations since 1770. On June 10, 1772, Washington filled out this partially printed document in his own hand and Posey signed it. John Parke Custis, Jonathan Palmer, and Thomas Bishop witnessed the document in court on October 19, 1772.
