John Beale Bordley annotated and inscribed this copy of his book, Essays and Notes on Husbandry and Rural Affairs, "To his Excellency General George Washington; From His obedient and humble servant The Author." The book describes Bordley's extensive experimental farming at Wye Island, off the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Like Washington, Bordley turned from tobacco to wheat as a cash crop and the two men had even exchanged new strains of wheat. Delighted by this gift, Washington signed the title page and wrote to Bordley, "I have been honoured with your 'Essays and Notes on Husbandry, and Rural Affairs' and offer you my sincere thanks for your kindness in sending them to me."
