Visit with Martha Washington and her granddaughter, Mrs. Peter, while they discuss the foods and desserts that were served during the holidays at Mount Vernon. Enjoy a piece of Martha Washington's Great Cake and coffee while listening to holiday music by our resident fifer, Don Francisco. The event concludes with a Q&A session and a photo opportunity with the ladies. Afterwards, guests are invited to tour the Mansion and estate.
Martha Washington's Great Cake was a large celebratory cake consisting of fruit and spices that likely would have been served as part of a grand Christmas dinner, Twelfth Night party, or at tea. It was so well liked that Mrs. Washington had her granddaughter Martha Parke Custis copy it down for use by other members of the family.
Martha Washington’s recipe, like many others of its time, is vague regarding certain ingredients and method of preparation. For that reason, we drew upon related period recipes to develop a great cake resembling the one her family knew. This recipe is a modern adaptation of the 18th-century original.Read the Recipe
