Watch how traditional silhouette portraits were made during George Washington’s lifetime: by hand and eye, created with only scissors and paper (no shadows or machines). Historical artisan Lauren Muney of “Silhouettes By Hand” presents this skill to help you create your own family portraits for the holidays.
Admission is not required to watch demonstrations. Extra fee applies to portrait requests. Optional historic-style frames and mats may be available, but supplies are limited. A portion of the proceeds benefits Mount Vernon.
The National Treasure Tour is dedicated to the behind-the-scenes filming of the blockbuster movie "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" at Mount Vernon. This popular tour combines Hollywood and history, giving visitors stories about the filming and also information on how the locations were used during George Washington's time. Included in this approximately hour-long specialty tour is the Mansion's basement and cornerstone, the setting for a pivotal scene.
