The Judgment of Paris

Engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after Giovanni Battista Cipriani, 1785, Ink on paper

The inventory taken of Mount Vernon after Washington’s death in 1799 included a cryptic listing of “4 small prints” in the New Room with no other identifying information. By examining Washington’s purchase records and the catalogues of print-sellers he patronized, Mount Vernon has identified two sets of neoclassical prints that match the dimensions noted in Washington’s list of prints brought home from Philadelphia. Through a combination of period examples and facsimiles, all four small prints are represented in the New Room for the first time in the Association’s history.
