Mount Vernon’s Mansion is unique among historic houses in that its three floors are accessible via stairs. The Mansion stairs are not only original, but provide a working history of staircases in colonial America. Mount Vernon’s beautiful grand staircase in the central passage needs to be restored and is showing the effect of more than two million feet climbing these iconic stairs each year. Similar restoration is needed with the other two primary staircases in the Mansion. With the support of the Neighborhood Friends, Mount Vernon will research, document and restored these historical stairs so that generations to come can continue to walk in the footsteps of General Washington.
