THE GEORGE WASHINGTON STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Thursday, April 22, 2010, 4:00 – 8:30 pm
We invite high school juniors and seniors who serve their schools or communities in a civic, service, sports, or other leadership capacity to participate in a special program at Mount Vernon designed to discuss the character and contributions of our nation’s first president. The program will explore how Washington’s legacy of character and civic responsibility remain relevant in our modern world. DC metro area high schools are invited to select three student leaders to participate in this FREE program, and their teacher sponsors (one from each school) will receive a stipend of $100.00. Program speakers include Dr. Peter Henriques, author of Realistic Visionary: Essays on the Life and Character of George Washington and Kathleen Matthews, Executive Vice President of Global Communications and Public Affairs, Marriott International, Inc., and former anchor of ABC 7 News. Special events include private evening tours of Washington’s Mansion, a history bee and dinner at the Mount Vernon food pavilion. For reservations: E-mail education@mountvernon.org by April 15, 2010. View Program Flyer or Pre-Program Student Readings.
George Washington's World for Kids
For a stiff-lipped Founder of the United States, George Washington led an awfully exciting life. Soldier, farmer, statesman...he was even famous for his love of dancing. On this new website, discover the real Washington at home and at war. Explore a 3D Mount Vernon in search of artifacts that reveal the many facets of the man. Play the harpsichord in a rhythm game so he can dance with his beloved Martha. And serve as gun captain at Washington's moment of greatest military achievement, the siege of Yorktown.
Martha Washington: A Life
In order to provide more resources on Martha Washington’s fascinating life and material culture, we have launched a brand new website, Martha Washington: A Life. The site provides biographical information, three fabulous teaching modules that correlate to national standards, a searchable archive of all objects and documents that relate to Martha Washington, and research resources.
