Excavations in the paddock have failed to discover the carpenters’ shop.

Slave carpenters lived and worked in this building before it burned in December 1792 under what Washington considered suspicious circumstances. Excavations in the 1930s and 1990s have failed to discover the site of the shop and the archaeologists plan to continue their search for this important craft structure during the next few years.
