"a well-assorted store for the use of ...family and servants." -- letter from an unidentified 1775 visitor.

| | Storehouse Interior - right side | Even though Mount Vernon was largely self sufficient, not everything needed to run the plantation was made on site. Every year George Washington ordered manufactured goods from cities in England and America. Many of these materials, including tools, nails, rum rations for the slaves and servants, plus some of the slaves' clothing, were kept in this storeroom under lock and key.
The other half of the building provided living space for the clerk who maintained the accounts and inventories.
