George Washington's Coach House was reconstructed on its original site in 1894.
George Washington had several horse-drawn vehicles, none of which survive today. The Coach House accomodated the family coach as well as a lighter, two wheeled-vehicle known as a chaise. Samuel Powel, Mayor of Philadelphia and good friend of the Washingtons, owned this handsome coach made by Clark Brothers, a well-known Philadelphia carriage maker, who also built a small coach for the Washingtons.
As a young man, George Washington acquired a riding chair similar to the one at right. Popular in America and England, riding chairs could travel country lanes and back roads more easily than bigger and heavier four-wheeled chariots and coaches.
