While published research reveals a great deal about Washington during his lifetime, many details about the management of the plantation, structural changes to buildings, furnishings, dress and entertainment, farm equipment and experimentation, slaves and slave life, and the personality and character of George Washington can be discovered in unpublished documents. The Library holds approximately 500 documents in George Washington's hand, and the largest known assemblage of Martha Washington's letters, about 40 out of an existing 140. Although manuscripts written by George and Martha Washington are of primary importance to the Association, significant information also is communicated in documents written by estate managers, family members, neighbors, and visitors to Mount Vernon.
