At age 11, George Washington inherited ten slaves from his father. By the end of Washington’s life, over 300 slaves lived at Mount Vernon. In his will, Washington arranged to free the 123 slaves belonging to him. The remainder, however, were “dower” slaves belonging to the estate of Mrs. Washington’s first husband, Daniel Parke Custis. By law, the Washingtons could not free the dower slaves.
