| Was George Washington religious? | |
| The answer is: | |
| There is some disagreement among historians on Washington's religious beliefs. In general, however, everyone seems to agree that Washington was a devout man who believed in God. He was active in several churches, he promoted the concept of religious freedom, he encouraged his soldiers to have faith in God, and he referred again and again to Divine Providence in his writings and speeches. At the same time, most historians feel that Washington was a private person who considered his faith a personal matter. He did not make a habit of discussing his beliefs or of preaching to others. | |
