How can I become involved with Mount Vernon? Q. How can I become more involved with Mount Vernon? A. Membership is the gateway to Mount Vernon. An annual contribution gives you access to admission privileges, discounts in the shops and restaurant, advance notice of educational programs, and exclusive invitations to special events. Mount Vernon also has an active volunteer program and welcomes assistance in a number of major program areas such as archaeology, gardens and grounds, marketing, and collections. Q. How does my gift help Mount Vernon? A. All gifts support Mount Vernon’s primary mission of preservation and education. These contributions are especially important in terms of preserving George Washington’s Mansion and other original structures, restoring and maintaining the gardens and grounds, and rebuilding structures that have disappeared since Washington’s time. Gifts also support educational programs such as classroom learning kits, lecture programs, hands-on activities for children, and specialty tours. Q. What is the capital campaign? A. In April 2002 Mount Vernon publicly announced a major capital campaign called George Washington: To Keep Him First. This national initiative seeks to provide more information about George Washington and his role in American history through innovative educational programming. The $85 million campaign calls for the construction of new on-site facilities and the development of new outreach programs that reach classrooms in all fifty states. Q. Does Mount Vernon accept government funding? A. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, the not-for-profit organization that maintains and operates George Washington’s historic estate, does not accept government funding. Instead we rely on private contributions from patriotic Americans to help fund Mount Vernon’s mission. Q. How can I make a gift to Mount Vernon? A. Making a gift to Mount Vernon is easy! Mount Vernon accepts gifts of cash, stock, securities, or property. Payment can be made by check or credit card, or as a pledge in writing.
