The Mount Vernon architectural fragments collection includes objects that were removed from the buildings as far back as the 1930s. Unfortunately, many of these objects are relatively poorly documented as to their original location. A running log of objects was kept that provides some minimal information on the objects and their original context. Beginning in the 1980s a more formal system of recording was implemented, and since 2001 architectural fragments have been recorded using a computerized database. Future plans call for making this database available online. Until that time you can view our online exhibit Highlights of the Architecural Fragments Collection. Many of the architectural fragments were displayed at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC in 2003 as part of the Saving Mount Vernon The Birth of Preservation in America exhibit.
With respect to the management of the architectural fragments collection, Mount Vernon strictly adheres to procedures and practices based on the guidelines outlined in the APTI Williamsburg Resolutions on Architectural Fragments. Mount Vernon also abides by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Code of Ethics and the American Association of Museums (AAM) Code of Ethics. |
