Reopening the Gardeners’ House:

Exterior of the Gardener's House new cypress shingled roof

After more than two years of research and hard work by staff and outside consultants, the restored Gardener’s House will open to visitors on March 21, 2008.  The building looks much like it did 200 years ago, when it was home to Mount Vernon’s head gardener, William Spence.

The Department will be undertaking a variety of repairs to the West Gate area in 2008.  This will entail extensive work on the two brick Porter’s Lodges, as well as replacing the fence and gate.

Study Restoration:

We have completed our work in George Washington’s Study.  The room underwent a major restoration in 1981, when all of the woodwork in the room was repainted in a faux mahogany finish to match that which had been applied in 1786.  After 27 years the room was in need of refreshing, and we made minor repairs as well as repainted the walls, ceiling, and portions of the woodwork.

Find out how this space was recently been restored.
