Since 1853, Mount Vernon has existed as the national monument to our country’s first and greatest hero, George Washington. The principal mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has been to preserve Washington’s estate and to educate Americans about his legacy of character and leadership. Today, Mount Vernon is regarded as America’s most popular historic property, welcoming more than one million visitors each year. Mount Vernon has always been on the forefront of historic preservation in America. Since saving Washington’s beloved Mansion from neglect in 1858, Mount Vernon has continued to undertake a number of important projects to protect the historic structures and landscape that comprise this great estate. Through a dynamic program of educational outreach, Mount Vernon places George Washington in thousands of classrooms and libraries across the country, significantly enriching the educational experience of students in all fifty states. Since its founding 150 years ago, Mount Vernon has never received funding from any level of government. We depend instead upon the generous contributions of patriotic Americans who take pride in our nation’s rich heritage and who want to pass along the lessons of our history to future generations.
