Gardening Days at Mount Vernon Features Herbal Historian Betsey-Ann Golon

Mount Vernon, Va. – Visitors can learn how to bring Mount Vernon into their own gardens when Betsey-Ann Golon, noted herbal historian, demonstrates centuries-old gardening techniques as a highlight of Mount Vernon’s Gardening Days. On Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Golon will greet visitors in the Kitchen Garden to share early American gardening tips.

Spectacular gardens are in bloom as Mount Vernon hosts its annual outdoor garden and gift sale, Gardening Days, from April 16 to May 7. Gardening Days features live demonstrations, plant sales and daily tours of Washington’s gardens at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Gardening Days attendees will get a once-a-year chance to purchase plants, herbs and seeds propagated from historic Mount Vernon plants. Also for sale throughout Gardening Days are gardening tools, gadgets, books, seeds, plants, pots, hats, gloves and more. Gardening Days and its events are included in the price of admission.

Mount Vernon is owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, founded in 1853, making it America’s oldest national preservation organization. Mount Vernon is located at the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, just 16 miles from Washington, D.C. Hours of operation: April-August, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; March, September, October, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; November – February, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission rates: adults, $11.00; senior citizens, $10.50; children age 6-11, when accompanied by an adult, $5.00; and children under age 5, FREE. Admission fees, restaurant and retail proceeds, along with private donations, support the preservation and interpretation of Mount Vernon.
