George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens
1858 Mansion Photo

This photograph, taken in 1858 illustrates the state of the Mansion when the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association acquired the property. As this picture shows much of the Mansion, such as the piazza, rusticated siding, chimney, and roof, required immediate restoration. Other features (Dove of Peace weathervane, shutters, and cupola) were restored more recently. Two notable elements, the side porch and the balustrade, were removed from the Mansion, since they were not part of George Washington’s home.
