George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens
Vaughan Plan

Mount Vernon’s archaeologists use this plan of the estate, drawn in 1787 by English visitor Samuel Vaughan, as a guide to locate archaeological sites. Many of the buildings shown on the plan – including the Mansion, and Servants’ Hall – are still standing; other buildings – the Blacksmiths’ Shop, the House for Families slave quarter, the Carpenters’ Shop and the Repository for Dung – no longer survive; while other features – the South Grove or trash pile, the Fruit and Garden Nursery: – were not included on the plan.
