George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens

1785
October 15: Martha Washington's niece, Fanny, marries George Washington's nephew, George Augustine Washington, at Mount Vernon. Over much of the next decade, the young couple will make their home at Mount Vernon and assist the Washingtons in running the estate and entertaining guests.

1787
May 9: George Washington leaves Mount Vernon to preside over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, leaving Mrs. Washington and the family at Mount Vernon. He will return on September 22nd.

1789
April 16: George Washington leaves Mount Vernon to be inaugurated as first president of the United States on April 30th in New York City. His wife is unhappy about the situation, writing to a nephew, "I am truly sorry to tell that the General is gone to New York…I think it was much too late for him to go in to publick life again, but it was not to be avoided."

May 16: Martha Washington and her youngest grandchildren, Nelly and Washy, set off from Mount Vernon accompanied by George Washington's nephew, Robert Lewis, and arrive in New York on the 28th. In New York, the First Family initially makes their home at #3 Cherry Street, which has been rented for them by Congress.
