Mount Vernon Guidebook
Visiting Mount Vernon is a new and different experience every time you tour. The estate is a working plantation with changing gardens, heritage animals, and stunning views. A wide variety of special events and seasonal activities bring the 18th century to life. Please go to our Calendar of Events for a comprehensive schedule of activities to enjoy during your next visit.

Sightseeing Cruises on the Potomac River

See Mount Vernon from a new view! Relax and enjoy a 30-minute narrated excursion along the Potomac River. Tickets are available at the Ford Orientation Center or on the boat.

Aboard the Spirit of Mount Vernon at 10:30, 11:30 and 12:30
March 13 - 29: Friday through Sunday
March 31- August 23: Tuesday through Sunday
August 28 - October 31:  Friday through Sunday
September 19 - 20: 18th-Century Craft Fair
October 17 - 18: Fall Harvest Family Days

Aboard the Miss Christin at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00
April 1 - September 7: Tuesday through Sunday
September 8 - October 13: Friday through Sunday
October 17 - November 1: Saturday and Sunday
September 19 - 20: 18th-Century Craft Fair
October 17 - 18: Fall Harvest Family Days

*Cruises run Holiday Mondays only, including Memorial Day (5/25/09), Labor Day (9/7/09), and Columbus Day (10/12/09).

George Washington's Pioneer Farmer Site
April 1 - October 31

Visitors can crack corn, taste a hoecake, visit the animals, build a fence, hoe the
fields, harvest crops, and tour the re-created 16-sided barn George Washington
designed. Mount Vernon's horses are featured during seasonal wheat treading demonstrations from July 4 through October.

Garden & Landscape Tours
April 1 - October 31

This 30-minute guided walking tour highlights Washington's creative design for his gardens. Daily at 11:00 a.m.

Slave Life Tour
April 1 - October 31

The daily lives and contributions of the slaves who lived at Mount Vernon are the focus of this 30-minute guided walking tour. Daily at 2:00 p.m.

Tribute at the Tomb
April 1 - October 31

This moving ceremony at the Tomb of George and Martha Washington commemorates their lives and deaths. Visitors participate in a wreathlaying and special readings. Daily at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
