George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens
Major Gifts and Mount Vernon Leadership Giving Societies

Mount Vernon values each and every gift – no matter what the form. Whether for unrestricted purposes, specific projects, operating needs or endowment, all contributions are important. Yet current donations of cash and relatively liquid assets will immediately impact Mount Vernon programs.

At the outset of the 21st century, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has established three key strategic goals – each requiring significant support both for specific associated programs as well as broader unrestricted needs.

Please help us finance all or part of these critical Mount Vernon initiatives. Together, we can bring the undying goodness and timeless lessons of George Washington’s life to all corners of America and the world.

·       Goal 1:  Mount Vernon will continue to ensure that, while on the estate, each visitor’s understanding of and appreciation for George Washington and his legacy are expanded and enriched.

·       Goal 2: Mount Vernon will continue to serve as the recognized premier global resource for information on and artifacts of George Washington.

·       Goal 3: Mount Vernon will continue to widen and deepen the public appreciation and knowledge of George Washington, his legacy and the world in which he lived.

We can provide much more information on these goals, what they mean, and what achieving them will entail.

In the meantime, here are some ways in which you can provide a major gift to support the attainment of these goals.  Your major gift to Mount Vernon helps us not only to preserve George Washington’s Estate & Gardens, but also to educate millions of visitors, schoolchildren and patriotic Americans nationwide about the life and legacies of the Father of Our County – whether on-site or online.

Leadership Giving Societies

Sharing George Washington’s legacy of character and leadership with millions every year is no small task. It requires the generous support of Americans who are willing to go above and beyond by lending their time and talent to a variety of special projects including the restoration of historic buildings and precious collections, the development of broad-based educational programs, and continued research into the life and times of George Washington.

These leadership annual-fund groups provide special privileges to donors, including invitations to special evenings and other educational and social events.

  • The 1732 Society ($25,000 and above)
  • The Washington Council ($10,000 to $24,999)
  • The Mount Vernon One Hundred ($5,000 to $9,999)

Donations of Cash, Securities, Other Assets or Gifts-in-Kind

Cash and stock gifts go to work right away supporting our efforts and can be appropriately deducted from your taxable income. Gifts of other assets (real estate, artwork, jewelry, etc.) also finance our operations; these gifts generally require qualified appraisals or independent valuations.  Donating appreciated assets eliminates capital gains taxes, so we suggest using assets with the lowest cost basis.   If you’re planning to sell real estate, consult your tax advisor about alternatives that might allow Mount Vernon to share directly in the sale proceeds, which could potentially reduce your capital gains taxes and still entitle you to an income tax deduction.

Matching Gifts

One of the smartest ways to give is through a matching gift program. Many companies offer matching programs that encourage and augment donations made by employees to charitable entities such as Mount Vernon. This will leverage the giving power of your donation, often doubling or even tripling a donation’s value. Please check with your company’s human resources office to find out if they will match your contribution to Mount Vernon.

Contributions through Donor-Advised Funds

This giving vehicle, usually managed by a financial institution, permits individuals or families to make irrevocable, tax-deductible general donations at any time.  At their convenience and discretion, donors can then recommend specific gifts from that fund account to benefit Mount Vernon or other charities.  Serving either as a complement to a private foundation or as a simpler, cost-effective alternative to one a donor-advised fund allows one to build a legacy of philanthropy.

Foundation Grants

Contributions from foundations of all types provide invaluable funds for unrestricted operations, special projects, or endowment.  Please let us know if you have a personal foundation, or whether your company’s foundation is interested in preservation, history, beautification and/or education. We would be delighted to make a proposal.

Gifts of Closely Held Assets

Many people who would like to make a meaningful gift to Mount Vernon may hesitate to do so out of a concern that a large measure of their net worth is tied up in a privately held firm.  If you find yourself in this situation, you will be pleased to learn that with a little planning, a number of options may be available to you.  To a large extent, what is possible will be a function of how a business is organized.

Gifts of closely held assets can come in the form of: stock in “C” and “S” corporations; partnerships, limited liability companies, and similar entities; and gifts of assets made by a business itself.

Special Considerations

Unrestricted contributions are preferred, as they allow us to address our most immediate needs. However, we also welcome a conversation if funding a specific program is of interest to you.  Mount Vernon has many projects – both short-term and ongoing – for which we seek support.  We can tell you about all the available options today – and tomorrow, when posterity will visit George Washington’s home and revere his legacy.

Please contact us about restricting your gift to the specific Mount Vernon program(s) of your choice.

Gifts to Mount Vernon may be made in memory of any deceased person(s) or in honor of any living person(s).  If you give us permission to list your gift in our annual report, then we will list your name along with your brief gift dedication.

Join Our Legacy Society with Your Bequest or Other Planned Gift

If you are considering a major gift, we also hope you will think about a bequest to Mount Vernon through your will or other element of your estate plan.  You may also wish to consider a beneficiary designation on a retirement asset or life insurance policy, or some other form of planned gift.

All individuals who make arrangements for a Mount Vernon planned gift become members of our legacy group: the Ann Pamela Cunningham Society.  Ann Pamela Cunningham founded the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1853 and tirelessly gathered support from across America to rescue George Washington's home, sparking the U.S. historic preservation movement.

Our hope is that you will let us know about your planned gift so we can thank and recognize you.  As a member of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Society, you will receive these privileges of membership:

  •  Personalized certificate of appreciation
  • Free subscription to Mount Vernon’s Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow newsletter
  •  Mount Vernon’s annual report
  • Updates on Mount Vernon news
  • Invitations to events and special evenings
  • Recognition of your planned gift in Mount Vernon publications
(unless you prefer to remain anonymous)

Planned Gift Types That May Interest and Benefit You

If you are considering a major gift, be aware that other gift types – such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, gift of real estate or a retained life estate arrangement involving a personal residence – may be suitable or preferable, taking into account your goals and needs.

Of course, arranging a gift for Mount Vernon through a will or through some other element of an estate plan – e.g., including our organization as a beneficiary of a financial, retirement, or life insurance asset – is also an act of considerable generosity that many people can afford even if a large lifetime gift is not realistic.
