Although 18th-century Americans did not enjoy candy bars or other modern chocolate treats as we know them today, they did love chocolate. Chocolate drinks became popular in Colonial America around the time of the Boston Tea Party, when many colonists boycotted tea and drank chocolate instead.
Throughout his adult life, Washington enjoyed chocolate with great frequency, generally as a breakfast beverage. George Washington ordered 20 pounds of chocolate from British merchant Thomas Knox in 1757. Surviving records reveal a number of orders for chocolate, typically from English Merchants.
