The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association holds George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in trust for the American people. A 501(c)(3) charitable organization, it does not receive taxpayer or government monies, but relies solely on the generosity of patriotic people. The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington’s construction has been funded exclusively by private donations, making it the only presidential-style library to receive no government money.

The fellowship program is also funded solely by private contributions from individuals and organizations that share Mount Vernon’s belief in the importance of advancing Washington’s example of character and leadership to inform and inspire future generations.
