Dogs welcome! This special walking tour covers 1.25 miles of Mount Vernon terrain stopping at five historic locations, including the West Gate. Learn about canine life at Mount Vernon, from the first president’s dogs to the dogs that live at Mount Vernon today.
It is well documented that the first president loved dogs. After the Revolutionary War, Washington tried to improve the quality of his hunting dogs through breeding. According to the American Kennel Club, Washington is the father of the American Foxhound.

Note: extended walking on uneven terrain; 90 minutes. All dogs must be leashed with their owner at all times. Dogs are allowed around the estate but not in the historic buildings, movie theaters, Museum or Education Center exhibition galleries.
