George Washington’s 282nd Birthday (Observed) – FREE ADMISSION

Celebrate the national observance of George Washington’s birthday by visiting his home and burial site FREE of charge on this day. The traditional wreathlaying ceremony at Washington's Tomb takes place at 10 a.m., followed by patriotic music and military performances on the Bowling Green. “General Washington” is on the grounds to greet visitors and receive birthday wishes all day.

A Military District of Washington representative places a wreath from the 44th President of the United States at the Tomb.


10:30am - 11:00am

“Official Observance of Washington’s Birthday” with the Governor on the East Lawn

Remarks by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, the Commanding General of the Military District of Washington, the Regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, and the President of Mount Vernon. The National Anthem will be performed and a special 21-gun salute will be offered in commemoration of General Washington.

“As I Know Him” in locations around the Historic Area

People from Washington’s World share personal stories about Washington and encourage guests to submit their stories for the afternoon program.


11:00am – 11:30am

Military demonstration

A military demonstration by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, featuring the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry, the Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps and the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard.


1:00pm - 1:30pm

Musical salute to the First President 

An encore performance by the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry’s Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps.


2:00pm - 2:30pm

“General Washington, We Honor You” at the Mansion Circle

People from Washington’s World gather with guests to share selected stories with the General, who reflects and speaks to the assembly. Selections of guest-submitted stories will be read aloud.


2:00pm - 5:30pm

Book Signing

Author Bentley Boyd will be signing several titles from his Chester Comix series, including our own George Washington Leads the Way, in the Vaughan Lobby of the Mount Vernon Inn Complex
