Eighteenth-Century Bookbinding Demonstrations

Travel back in time to when e-readers were obsolete and books were artfully bound!

In celebration of the new Take Note! George Washington the Reader exhibition and Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington opening, artist Paul A. McClintock performs 18th-century bookbinding demonstrations for Mount Vernon’s visitors! Watch as McClintock exhibits the lost art of gathering and sewing together the sheets of a book, drawing on the same techniques used in Washington’s time.

Demonstrations take place in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center lobby, directly outside of the Take Note! George Washington the Reader exhibition.

Included in admission. Paul McClintock’s hand-bound journals will be available for purchase during the demonstrations.

On September 27, demonstrations will take place from 12pm - 5pm.
