Recite “Washington’s Prayer for His Country” and the Pledge of Allegiance as part of this tribute, offered daily at the tomb of George and Martha Washington.
George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, offers special activities in honor of the inauguration of the 44th president! From January 17 through January 22, children are invited to participate in a “George Washington Presidential Scavenger Hunt”! Explore Washington’s Estate looking for clues that will lead to a special prize (while supplies last). Mount Vernon will give the 44th visitor through the gate a special gift from January 18 through January 21.
While at Mount Vernon, take the oath of office! View a replica of the first presidential inauguration with a life-size figure of Washington taking the oath of office. Visitors have a chance to “step into Washington’s shoes” by placing their hand on a reproduction of the Bible upon which Washington took the oath of office. Visitors recite the presidential oath and, upon completion, lift their hand to hear the roar of a cheering crowd!
Visitors of all ages can experience a unique piece of history now on display in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum - George Washington’s annotated copy of the Acts of Congress. This rare volume garnered world-wide attention this summer when it was offered for sale and broke auction world records for an American historical document. The remarkably well-preserved book includes Washington’s copy of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and other legislation passed by the first session of Congress, complete with his personal annotations. The Acts of Congress will remain on display through February 18, 2013.
All activities are included in Estate admission: adults, $17; children ages 6-11, $8; and children under 5 are free. Please visit MountVernon.org for more information and to plan a visit.
